Karnataka BJP Chief Blames Government's Inaction for Maternal and Infant Fatalities

Belagavi (Karnataka), Dec 9 (NationPress) Karnataka BJP President and MLA, B.Y. Vijayendra on Monday stated that the negligence of the Congress-led government is contributing to the fatalities of new mothers and infants in the state.

While addressing the media after his visit to the government hospital in Belagavi, he expressed, “We are here to grasp the reality. This visit is not politically motivated. At present, the underprivileged are suffering injustices, and new mothers and infants are tragically losing their lives. We will bring this matter to the Assembly's attention.”

He further commented that the ministers in charge, including Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao and Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil, are not treating these fatalities with the seriousness they deserve.

He emphasized that the government must acknowledge its responsibility and take immediate action.

Vijayendra claimed that the Congress government under CM Siddaramaiah shows no concern for north Karnataka and suggested that the state is currently governed by a development-deficient administration.

He noted that discussions have taken place with opposition leaders regarding this critical issue.

On one hand, the government faces allegations of corruption, while on the other, there is a pronounced lack of development, he asserted.

He highlighted that even members of the ruling party are at odds with each other.

The leader of the opposition in the Legislative Council, Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, criticized the prevailing situation, indicating that confusion surrounds the matter of maternal and infant deaths.

“We are witnessing hospitals transforming into mortuaries,” he claimed.

He alleged that this dire situation has emerged due to the government's focus on corruption rather than on the proper maintenance of hospitals.

He indicated that the procurement of substandard medicines has contributed to these tragic occurrences in various locations.

Narayanaswamy explained that this is why BJP leaders, including Vijayendra, former Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan, BJP MLAs Shashikala Jolle, and senior leader Hemalatha Nayak, visited the hospital to obtain accurate information from doctors regarding the situation.

The issue of maternal fatalities in government hospitals in Ballari district gained attention after the death of Sumaya, who was admitted to VIMS in Ballari on November 10.

After undergoing a cesarean section on November 12, she was given IV fluids, which led to kidney complications resulting in multiple organ failure. Despite undergoing dialysis, she passed away on December 5.

Before Sumaya, Rojamma, Nandini, Muskaan, Mahalaxmi, and Lalitamma also lost their lives due to post-delivery complications in Ballari district.

These tragic incidents have sparked widespread concern and outrage across the state.
