Guwahati/Aizawl, June 10 (NationPress) The newly authorized Broad Gauge (BG) line from Hortoki to Sairang by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) is set to connect Aizawl in Mizoram, marking it as the fourth capital city in the northeastern region to gain railway access, as confirmed by officials on Tuesday.

The official noted that such significant railway projects linking a state capital are typically inaugurated by the Prime Minister.

With the CRS's approval and the successful commissioning of the Hortoki to Sairang railway line, the official mentioned that the formal inauguration can occur anytime after June 17.

The Bairabi–Sairang railway initiative is divided into four segments: Bairabi-Hortoki (16.72 km, commissioned in July 2024), Hortoki–Kawnpui (9.71 km), Kawnpui–Mualkhang (12.11 km), and Mualkhang–Sairang (12.84 km).

A senior official from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) stated that this achievement completes the total length of the new railway line project, spanning 51.38 km from Bairabi, located near Assam’s Hailakandi district, to Sairang, close to Aizawl city, providing direct rail connection to the capital of Mizoram for the first time.

The final stretch of 33.864 km from Hortoki to Sairang underwent an extensive inspection by Northeast Frontier Circle CRS Sumeet Singhal from June 6 to June 10.

According to the official, the completion of this final segment signifies Mizoram's full integration into the national railway network.

This remarkable development is anticipated to greatly improve both passenger and freight transport, boost socio-economic growth, and fulfill the long-awaited dream of the people of Mizoram to welcome trains into their capital, as per the official.

The CRS inspection was conducted using a motor trolley and on foot, followed by a speed trial with an inspection train pulled by a diesel locomotive.

Despite the challenging terrain, the NFR has executed commendable work.

After the inspection, the CRS granted permission for public transport of goods and passengers on the BG line from Hortoki to Sairang, with a maximum speed limit of 90 kmph on the main line. The Bairabi–Sairang railway project is regarded as an engineering marvel of the Indian Railways, comprising 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges, with a total tunnel length of 12,853 meters. Notably, bridge number 196 stands at 104 meters, making it 42 meters taller than the Qutub Minar. The project also includes five Road Over Bridges and six Road Under Bridges.

This CRS authorization represents a crucial milestone in integrating Mizoram’s capital into the national railway grid, showcasing Indian Railways’ dedication to developing infrastructure in remote and strategically vital areas, as stated by the official.

With the CRS inspection successfully completed, Aizawl will soon become the fourth state capital in Northeast India to be linked to the national railway network, following Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
