Bengaluru, Sep 3 (NationPress) Amid the ongoing controversy regarding the commencement of the historic Dussehra celebrations, the Mysuru district administration visited the residence of Booker Prize laureate Banu Mushtaq located in Ameer Mohalla, Karnataka's Hassan city on Wednesday. During this visit, Mushtaq received an official invitation to inaugurate Dussehra and was also honored with a warm welcome.
The decision made by the Congress-led government to select Banu Mushtaq for this esteemed role has ignited significant debate within the state.
The BJP has raised concerns about this choice, alleging that Banu Mushtaq lacks respect for Goddess Chamundeshwari and the association of the Kannada language with the deity. Additionally, BJP leaders have claimed that Deepa Bhasti, the translator of Mushtaq's Booker-winning novel, was overlooked due to her being a Hindu.
During the visit, a delegation led by Mysuru Deputy Commissioner Laxmikanth Reddy presented Mushtaq with a bouquet, a traditional Mysuru Peta (headgear), a shawl, and a memento, while formally inviting her to inaugurate the celebrations.
In a gesture of reciprocity, Banu Mushtaq presented a copy of her award-winning book 'Heart Lamp', inscribed with a congratulatory message on the first page. Family members were present at this memorable occasion. She is set to inaugurate the prestigious Dussehra festivities on September 22.
Speaking to the press at Mushtaq’s residence, Deputy Commissioner Laxmikanth Reddy stated, “As you may know, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced Banu Mushtaq's name to inaugurate the Dussehra celebrations atop Chamundi Hills in Mysuru and instructed us to extend the invitation respectfully.”
“In compliance with these directions, the entire district administration, including the CEO, Corporation Commissioner, and members of the Dussehra Welcome Committee, traveled to Hassan to extend the invitation. Banu Mushtaq has graciously accepted the invitation to inaugurate Dussehra on September 22 in Mysuru. I would like to express my gratitude for her agreement to lead this historic event,” Reddy remarked.
Expressing her appreciation, Banu Mushtaq stated, “I am grateful for the invitation. There is no issue. Dussehra is a festival that resonates within every household; it truly embodies the spirit of the land.”
In the meantime, former Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and BJP legislator C.N. Ashwath Narayan has claimed that the state government’s invitation to Banu Mushtaq serves merely to stir up controversy.
“Banu Mushtaq does not exhibit respect towards the goddess. If traditional rituals are to be performed during the inauguration of Dussehra, this choice is inappropriate,” he asserted.
Congress MLA Kadaluru Uday countered that the BJP is attempting to sow discord within society.
“Why not Banu Mushtaq? Does she not belong to Karnataka? For every matter, they drag in caste and religion,” he remarked.
