Chandigarh, Oct 14 (NationPress) In the midst of the turmoil surrounding the suicide case of Haryana Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Y. Puran Kumar, an investigation officer tragically took his own life on Tuesday, leaving behind a three-page suicide note and a video recording.
The investigation officer, Sandeep Lathar, fatally shot himself using his service revolver in Rohtak.
His suicide note accused ADGP Puran Kumar of corruption.
Lathar was probing corruption allegations against the ADGP and documented a video message alongside the lengthy note.
Shortly after state DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was placed on leave amid the ongoing controversy surrounding IPS officer Kumar’s suicide, Om Parkash Singh was appointed as the acting Director General of Police.
The government had acted on the family's demands for accountability regarding Kumar, who had been reportedly harassed.
The Chandigarh Police initiated a first information report (FIR) following the acknowledgment of a 'final note' left by IPS officer Puran Kumar, who purportedly died by suicide on October 7.
The FIR was filed just hours after Puran Kumar's spouse, senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, urged Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to ensure an FIR is registered and that those named in her husband’s 'final note' are suspended and arrested.
Amneet Kumar has yet to consent to an autopsy for her husband, claiming the involvement of 'powerful, high-ranking officials from Haryana' in the matter.
Eight days post-suicide, Puran Kumar's body remains in a mortuary, with ongoing deadlock between his wife and the state government regarding the arrest of DGP Kapur and the dismissed Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya.
Describing the situation as a tragic and sensitive issue, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to honor their commitments to the family and take action against the officers responsible for the caste-based discrimination faced by IPS officer Kumar.
Following a visit to Puran Kumar's family, Congress MP Gandhi stated, 'It is a tragedy. He was an IPS officer. Haryana CM assured the family justice would be served, yet three days have gone by without any action.'
'Y. Puran Kumar has two daughters who have lost their father and are experiencing immense pressure. This sends a detrimental message to millions of Dalits that no matter how successful or intelligent you are, suppression is inevitable,' he added.
'As the Leader of Opposition, my message to the PM and Haryana CM is to fulfill the promise made to the daughters, allow the funeral to proceed, cease this drama, and take action against the officials putting pressure on the family.'
