Guwahati/Agartala, March 16 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to convene a meeting with the Chief Ministers of eight northeastern states in Guwahati on Sunday to assess the implementation of three new criminal laws, which have replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other legislation as of July last year, officials confirmed.

An official from the Assam government noted that the Home Minister has participated in various programs in Assam and Mizoram since Friday (March 14). After concluding this critical meeting regarding the three new criminal laws with the Chief Ministers, he will return to New Delhi later that night.

“HM Shah will engage with the eight CMs at a hotel in Guwahati. He intends to evaluate the implementation of the three new criminal laws across the eight northeastern states,” the official shared with IANS.

Presentations will be made by each state during the meeting, detailing the progress of the laws' implementation within their jurisdictions.

The new legislation, namely Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), superseded the IPC, Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act, effective from July 1 this year.

A senior official indicated that thousands of officials from various departments across the northeastern states have been undergoing training on these three criminal laws.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, along with his counterpart from Mizoram, Lalduhoma, and several other Chief Ministers, have already arrived in Guwahati for the meeting regarding the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita laws.

CM Saha conducted a meeting last week in Agartala with senior officials from various departments to evaluate the execution of the three new criminal laws in the state. This meeting included senior officials from key departments such as Home, Police, Law, Prosecution, Forensic, Health, and Prisons.

An expert in criminal law noted that approximately 200 different languages and dialects are spoken across the eight northeastern states; initially, English and Hindi versions of the three new criminal laws will be utilized in the region.
