Amit Shah to Lead Critical Security Review Meeting for J&K Today

Jammu, Dec 19 (NationPress) The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, is poised to lead a significant security review meeting concerning Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) on Thursday, representing the initial session of its kind following the formation of an elected government in the Union Territory.

Since J&K is a Union Territory, the responsibility for security and law & order remains with the Union government.

This meeting will see participation from J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, heads of intelligence agencies, the J&K DGP, leaders of CAPFs, and others involved in the anti-terrorism framework.

Particular emphasis will be placed on addressing the recent surge in terror incidents that occurred shortly after the establishment of an elected government in J&K.

On October 20, a foreign mercenary and a local terrorist infiltrated the workers' camp of an infrastructure firm in the Gagangir area of Ganderbal district and opened fire indiscriminately.

This attack resulted in the deaths of seven civilians, including six workers from the company and a local doctor.

Subsequently, on October 24, terrorists targeted an Army vehicle in Botapathri, Gulmarg, killing three soldiers and two civilian porters.

On November 2, a powerful hand grenade was thrown into the bustling Sunday Market near the Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in Srinagar. This explosion claimed the life of a 42-year-old woman, a mother of three, and injured nine other civilians.

Intelligence reports suggest that the handlers of terrorism based across the border are increasingly frustrated following the peaceful, participatory Lok Sabha and legislative elections in J&K, prompting terrorists to attempt a final push to sustain declining terrorism in the region.

Despite statistical evidence indicating a decrease in both the frequency of terrorist attacks and casualties since 2019, when Article 370 was revoked and J&K was bifurcated into two Union Territories, the ongoing efforts to rejuvenate terrorism by adversaries remain a significant concern for the Union Home Ministry.

In 2019, a total of 50 civilians lost their lives due to terrorist activities, whereas only 14 fatalities have been reported this year as of now. While statistics show a reduction, the focus of terrorism has shifted towards non-local foreign mercenaries since 2019, with local youth largely distancing themselves from militant affiliations.
