New Delhi, March 21 (NationPress) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday reaffirmed the Modi government’s zero tolerance stance towards terrorism and criticized previous administrations for being 'lenient on terror'.

While addressing the debate on the operations of the Ministry of Home Affairs in the House, Shah enumerated several groundbreaking decisions made by the Modi administration, including the abrogation of Article 370, which he claimed has ushered in enduring peace in the valley.

Speaking in the Rajya Sabha, the Home Minister noted that following the removal of Article 370, local involvement with terrorists has completely ceased, leading to a restoration of peace throughout the region.

He further stated that the glorification of terrorists, which was prevalent during the UPA regime, has been eradicated during the NDA's decade-long governance, with a significant 70 percent decrease in fatalities from terror-related incidents.

To put things into perspective, he revealed that from 2004 to 2014, the region experienced 7,217 terror incidents, while between 2014 and 2024, this number plummeted to 2,242.

The Home Minister expressed profound respect for the sacrifices of police personnel and emphasized their contributions to enhancing the nation’s security and governance.

"I want to honor all police personnel who have laid down their lives for the safety and security of our citizens. Owing to their immense sacrifice, India is now ready to assume a crucial role in global matters, a position we have been striving for over 76 years. My heartfelt gratitude extends to the families of these gallant officers for their unwavering commitment," he stated.

Shah highlighted the legacy challenges faced by the nation prior to PM Modi's leadership, emphasizing that issues like terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, Left Wing Extremism, and Northeast insurgencies had been obstacles to India's advancement.

"These challenges were hindering India’s potential for peace and growth. However, under PM Modi, we have eliminated these barriers," Shah declared.

Focusing on Jammu and Kashmir, Shah underscored the dramatic shift in strategy since the Modi administration took office.

He reminisced about when terrorist assaults on civilians were a routine occurrence, especially during religious festivals.

"In the past, the central government often remained silent, fearing political repercussions. But under PM Modi, we implemented a 'Zero Tolerance' policy against terrorism," Shah remarked.

He cited the surgical strikes and airstrikes executed shortly after the Pulwama attack in 2019 as instances of India’s new assertiveness in combating terrorism.

Shah elaborated on the removal of Article 370.

"I am grateful to our forebears for deeming Article 370 temporary, yet the opposition refused to acknowledge the necessity for change. On August 5, 2019, PM Modi’s government made the courageous decision to abolish it. There was no longer any fear of losing the vote bank. We achieved the full integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India, ensuring that all laws applied to the region," Shah expounded.

He also highlighted the reopening of cinema halls in Jammu and Kashmir, the peaceful celebration of major festivals like Diwali and Krishna Janmashtami, and the successful hosting of G20 leaders in the region as indicators of the positive transformation in the Union Territory.

"Such changes would have been unthinkable in the past, but today, Jammu and Kashmir is flourishing in peace," he remarked.

"The frequency of terrorist attacks has drastically reduced. We also took stringent measures against local networks linked to terrorists, ensuring that the threat was eradicated from within the system as well," Shah added.

He informed that over 40,000 government jobs and 1.51 lakh self-employment opportunities were generated in Jammu and Kashmir from 2019 to 2024, and emphasized the role of skilling clubs in enhancing employment in the region.

"Jammu and Kashmir has drawn investments amounting to Rs 12,000 crore, thanks to an attractive industrial policy. Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) worth Rs 1.1 lakh crore have been finalized," he concluded.
