Amaravati, Jan 9 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu, conducted an aerial survey over the ONGC well in Irusumanda village, located in the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district, where a significant blowout has been ongoing for the fifth consecutive day.
Following the aerial observation, the Chief Minister convened a review meeting regarding the blowout with officials from the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), along with Konaseema District Collector Mahesh Kumar, MP Harish Balayogi, and MLA Varaprasad in Rayavaram within the Mandapeta constituency.
During the meeting, he inquired about the strategies being implemented to manage the blowout and instructed that measures be taken to offer compensation for the coconut trees that have suffered damage due to the flames.
In the meantime, ONGC confirmed that efforts are ongoing to control and cap the Mori 5 well, which is managed by PEC contractor Deep Industries Ltd., in accordance with the sanctioned blowout control strategy.
The Crisis Management Team stated that a significant portion of the debris at the wellsite has been cleared, allowing for improved access to the wellhead area.
ONGC also noted that critical structural impediments, including parts of the mast and related equipment, have been removed, facilitating progress towards capping the well. All vital equipment and materials necessary to expedite operations have been transported to the site.
A continuous water blanket is being utilized to ensure safe operations near the wellhead, as stated by ONGC.
With conditions stabilizing, residents in nearby areas have returned to their normal activities.
ONGC’s Crisis Management Team remains committed to adhering to all established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), conducting all operations in close collaboration with local authorities. The safety of the community and environmental protection are ONGC’s top priorities, the organization stated.
The blowout occurred abruptly on Monday afternoon during repair work utilizing a workover rig, following a temporary halt in production.
A powerful eruption released an enormous volume of gas mixed with crude oil, shooting skyward, and creating thick clouds of gas and smoke that spread across Irusumanda and surrounding villages, inciting panic among the residents.
