What Happened with the Blowout at ONGC Well in Andhra Pradesh?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Amaravati, Jan 6 (NationPress) The blowout of natural gas at a well operated by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in Andhra Pradesh's Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema district has persisted for the second consecutive day as of Tuesday.
Crisis management teams from ONGC, along with firefighting units, are actively working to control the blowout located on the fringes of Irusumanda village in Malikipuram Mandal.
Officials have reported a decrease in the intensity of the fire, anticipating further improvements in the situation throughout the day.
The crude oil-mixed gas unexpectedly surged on Monday afternoon during repair operations with a workover rig, following a temporary halt in production at the well known as Mori-5.
This powerful blowout released an enormous volume of gas blended with crude oil, propelling it high into the air. Thick clouds of gas and smoke enveloped Irusumanda and adjacent villages, akin to dense fog, causing widespread panic among residents.
Authorities have relocated over 500 individuals from the village to safety in relief camps.
ONGC reported no injuries or fatalities, stating that the well is situated in a remote area with no human habitation within approximately 500-600 metres.
The ONGC teams have secured the area and initiated cooling operations. "Preparatory work is underway to ensure well-control and, if necessary, capping of the well," they stated.
Additionally, ONGC has started coordinating with international well-control experts, including arrangements for advanced well-control and casing-cutting operations, pending site evaluation.
Senior management and technical specialists from ONGC are closely observing the situation, mobilizing extra equipment from nearby locations like Narsapuram.
The Konaseema district Collector, Mahesh Kumar, and Superintendent of Police Rahul Meena are overseeing the firefighting efforts. Amalapuram MP Harish Mathur and local MLA Varaprasad are also stationed near the accident site to monitor developments.
