Amaravati, July 22 (NationPress) A Special Court dedicated to SC/ST matters in Rajamahendravaram, Andhra Pradesh, has granted permission for a renewed investigation into the 2022 homicide of a Dalit youth allegedly committed by YSRCP MLC Ananta Uday Bhaskar.
The court mandated that a supplementary charge sheet be submitted within 90 days.
This ruling paves the way for a re-examination of the case, a move initiated by the TDP-led NDA administration.
Ananta Uday Bhaskar, a leader of the YSRCP and MLC from Kakinada, is accused of murdering his former driver, Veedhi Subrahmanyam, a Dalit, and subsequently disposing of his body at his own residence in 2022.
It is claimed that during a dispute on the night of May 19, 2022, Ananta Babu pushed the victim, leading to his fatal fall.
Furthermore, he allegedly inflicted injuries on Subrahmanyam’s corpse to disguise the death as a result of a road accident. However, the victim's family was unconvinced and filed a police complaint.
Following his arrest, the YSRCP party suspended him.
According to Ananta Babu’s account to the police, he confronted Subrahmanyam about his drinking habits, which led to an angry exchange. He claimed that he pushed the driver, resulting in a fall that caused head injuries. When Subrahmanyam attempted to retaliate, Ananta Babu allegedly pushed him again, causing more serious injuries.
The MLC reported that after giving water to Subrahmanyam, he became unresponsive shortly thereafter. To cover his actions, he intended to present the incident as a road accident. He transported the body in his vehicle to a dumping site, where he inflicted additional injuries with sticks.
Later, he took the body to Subrahmanyam’s house, claiming it was a road accident. However, the family was skeptical upon seeing the injuries, leading to a confrontation, after which Ananta left the scene, abandoning the body in his car.
Due to the investigation officer's failure to file the charge sheet within the stipulated 90 days, Ananta Babu was granted default bail in December 2022.
After the TDP-led coalition government assumed office last year, they opted for a re-investigation of the case.
In April of this year, the government ordered this re-investigation, appointing Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and Kakinada DSP Manish Devraj Patil as the investigation officer.
The investigating officer has been instructed to seek the court's authorization.
