Bhubaneswar, Dec 1 (NationPress) A new controversy has arisen following the tragic and unnatural demise of yet another student within the hostel confines of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University in Bhubaneswar late Sunday night.
This marks the third reported suicide at KIIT University this year.
The student, identified as Rahul Yadav (18), hailing from Raipur in the nearby state of Chhattisgarh, was in his first year studying Computer Science. His body was discovered hanging in his hostel room on Sunday evening.
According to officials from the Commissionerate Police, the Infocity Police Station received a report of the incident around 10:45 p.m. on Sunday.
“Upon receiving the alert, the Infocity Police swiftly arrived at the location. The locked room was opened with police oversight and documented through videography. Subsequently, the body was transported to KIMS Hospital, where the attending physician pronounced Yadav dead,” stated the Commissionerate Police.
Following the MLC received from the hospital, authorities have initiated an investigation by filing an Unnatural Death (UD) case (153/25) at the Infocity Police Station on Monday.
The police also mentioned that a Scientific Officer inspected the scene, during which the Investigating Officer seized items, including the deceased's mobile phone and laptop, listed properly in a seizure report. The room was sealed until the arrival of the deceased's parents.
The Commissioner of Police and senior officials visited the hostel room to review the evidence and converse with fellow students to understand the context surrounding the tragic incident.
An inquest and post-mortem will be conducted once the parents arrive, who are currently traveling to Bhubaneswar.
To maintain order, police have deployed a platoon of officers around the hostel on Sunday and Monday night, and the situation is reported to be stable.
In light of the incident, various legislators, representing different political parties, have called for a thorough and unbiased investigation.
Meanwhile, KIIT University representatives have indicated that an official statement regarding the occurrence will be released soon.
It is noteworthy that the institution faced significant backlash earlier this year due to the separate deaths of two female students from Nepal. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has since formed a fact-finding committee to probe the two suicide cases that took place on February 16 and May 1 at KIIT University.
