Senior IAS officer Anurag Jain has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog, while Ashok Barnwal has been named the officiating Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, according to official orders issued on 22 July. The twin appointments mark a significant bureaucratic reshuffle spanning both the Centre and Madhya Pradesh state administration.

Anurag Jain's Appointment at NITI Aayog

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the posting of Anurag Jain, a 1989-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, to head the country's premier public policy think tank. The official Central Government order stated that Jain's appointment is effective 'from the date of his assumption of charge of the post, till his approved tenure of extension in service and thereafter, for an overall period of two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, on the same terms and conditions as applied to his predecessor.'

Prior to this elevation, Jain was serving as the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh, making his transition to NITI Aayog a direct upward move to the national policy stage. NITI Aayog, which replaced the Planning Commission in 2015, serves as the government's principal think tank for long-term strategy and cooperative federalism.

Ashok Barnwal Steps In as MP Chief Secretary

With Jain's departure to the Centre, the Madhya Pradesh government moved swiftly to fill the vacuum at the top of its bureaucracy. Ashok Barnwal, a 1991-batch IAS officer, has been appointed Chief Secretary on an officiating basis, temporarily and until further orders, as confirmed by an official state notification.

Barnwal brings a wide administrative portfolio to the role. He currently holds the position of Additional Chief Secretary in both the Public Health and Medical Education Department and the Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department, and additionally carries charge as Commissioner of Food Safety, Madhya Pradesh. His experience across health, rehabilitation, and food safety administration positions him as a seasoned hand for the state's top executive post.
