Jammu, Sep 15 (NationPress) The Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) achieved a remarkable feat with the inaugural journey of the Indian Army's first dedicated freight train, running from BD Bari to Anantnag on September 12-13, a defence official reported on Monday.
"The train successfully transported 753 metric tonnes of advance winter stocking (AWS) materials intended for Indian Army units and formations in Jammu & Kashmir, representing a pivotal change in the army's AWS strategy," stated Defence Ministry spokesperson, Lt Col Suneel Bartwal.
"This strategic move highlights the Indian Army's relentless pursuit of capability enhancement to maintain operational readiness in the rugged Himalayan landscape."
In a distinct illustration of dual-use logistics and military-civil integration, the return journey of the freight train delivered Kashmiri apples to markets across India, according to Lt Col Bartwal.
"This initiative not only fortifies the Army's winter preparedness but also provides immediate support to local communities. Farmers, who previously faced significant losses due to road disruptions from landslides and floods, will now be able to transport their harvest efficiently, ensuring economic relief and livelihood stability."
"This project embodies the Army's commitment to nation-building, extending its influence beyond defense to actively contribute to the socio-economic upliftment of Kashmir. By utilizing rail infrastructure for both military and civilian needs, the Indian Army has made significant progress in enhancing resilience, connectivity, and prosperity in the region," the spokesperson added.
The freight train successfully carried apple shipments from Budgam railway station to Adarsh Nagar in Delhi today. The first dedicated freight train was ceremoniously flagged off by J&K Lt Governor Manoj Sinha.
"I have flagged off the first dedicated Parcel Train from Budgam to Adarsh Nagar Delhi. This new freight train service is a significant advancement for the apple growers of the Union Territory, enabling them to distribute their produce nationwide," the Lieutenant Governor announced on X.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed gratitude to the Railway Ministry for the freight train, but emphasized that given the immense losses faced by the fruit farmers of the Kashmir Valley, a single freight train is insufficient to transport all the fruit consignments currently stranded in trucks due to ongoing blockages of the Srinagar-Jammu national highway.
