Bhubaneswar, Sep 4 (AINS) A squad from Assam Police, aided by the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate Police, apprehended an individual in Bhubaneswar on Thursday linked to a fraud case filed at the Bihubor Police Station in Sivasagar district of Assam.

The individual arrested, identified as Nirup Sundar Choudhury, resides in the Niladri Vihar area of Bhubaneswar.

Meanwhile, the main suspect, Samir Patnaik, along with his accomplice Sunil Sahoo, managed to evade capture. It is alleged that Samir, in conspiracy with Nirup and Sunil, defrauded Dushmant of approximately Rs 3 crores a few months ago.

The trio reportedly fled to Odisha in March this year and had been hiding in Bhubaneswar since. Following a complaint lodged by Dushmant, the Bihubor Police initiated a case and summoned the three accused for questioning.

However, despite multiple notifications, they failed to respond. As a result, a team from Assam Police traveled to Bhubaneswar on Wednesday to apprehend the suspects.

With the cooperation of the Bhubaneswar police, Nirup was arrested on Thursday. Unfortunately, the lead suspect, Samir, who was residing at Subhadra Apartment under the Infocity Police Station, managed to escape during the operation. The authorities also could not capture Sunil.

In a statement to the media, Dushmant revealed that he, along with Samir, Nirup, and Sunil, was involved in mining operations at a coal mine in Assam.

Dushmant further disclosed that the accused allegedly conspired to have him arrested by filing a false case against him at the Sahid Nagar Police Station in Bhubaneswar in February 2025.

During his time in custody, the accused reportedly sold all the coal extracted from the mine in Assam, resulting in misappropriation of over Rs 3 crores.

Upon his release, Dushmant traveled to Assam and discovered the fraud perpetrated by the trio. He subsequently filed a case against Samir, Sunil, and Nirup at the Bihubor police station in August this year.
