Itanagar, Aug 19 (NationPress) In a significant move to bolster local startups, Chief Minister Pema Khandu announced the expansion of the Arunachal Pradesh Innovation and Investment Park (APIIP) on Tuesday. This expansion aims to increase the capacity for accommodating entrepreneurs from the current 50 annually and broaden the scope of the Arunachal Pradesh Entrepreneurship Development Program (APEDP).
An official from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) revealed that the APIIP, established in August 2020 under the Planning, Investment and Finance department, serves as the state's premier incubator under the Arunachal Pradesh Start-Up Policy.
The APIIP hosts annual start-up challenges to discover promising entrepreneurs. Along with providing seed funding, it offers nine months of incubation and pre-incubation programs to assist selected entrepreneurs in achieving commercial success, the official stated.
In just four years, the state has supported 106 startups across three cohorts, distributing over Rs 4.5 crore in seed funding, with an impressive 38 percent of these being women-led enterprises.
These startups showcase the rich diversity of Arunachal Pradesh, spanning sectors such as agriculture, handicrafts, IT, e-commerce, and tourism, Khandu noted.
The Chief Minister praised APIIP for its groundbreaking initiative this year, making it the first state in India to utilize Artificial Intelligence in the startup application selection process. Fifty promising new startups were chosen through this innovative method. However, Khandu emphasized that selecting only 50 startups per year is insufficient.
He proposed expanding the APIIP facilities and assured governmental support, either by leasing an existing building or constructing a new one.
Alongside Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, he presented graduation certificates to the Cohort 3.0 startups and awarded prize money to those in Cohort 4.0.
In addition, APIIP signed memorandums of understanding with seven educational institutions to facilitate mentorship programs for budding startups.
The Chief Minister described this as a significant milestone and announced that startup cells would soon be established within these institutions, fostering student innovations and ensuring support for every viable idea.
The participating institutions include Arunachal Pradesh University, Pasighat, Arunachal University of Studies, Namsai, Dorjee Khandu Govt College, Tawang, Dera Natung Govt College, Itanagar, NERIST, Nirjuli, NIT, Jote, and Rajiv Gandhi University, Doimukh.
Khandu credited the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose vision for a Viksit Bharat 2047 has inspired the state government to implement these innovative measures.
“His (PM Modi’s) Startup India mission has reshaped India’s entrepreneurial landscape - transforming garages into global IPOs and small towns into major tech hubs. In Arunachal Pradesh, every road constructed, every enterprise supported, and every dream nurtured is a step towards Viksit Arunachal,” he stated.
To further empower the youth to become successful entrepreneurs, Khandu announced the launch of YES Arunachal – Youth Empowerment Sphere, a comprehensive platform for all government schemes. He expressed confidence that APIIP would play a crucial role in the success of this initiative as well.
The Chief Minister also pointed out that the Investment Cell within the department of Planning, Investment & Finance should evolve beyond a mere ‘cell’. He suggested upgrading it to a directorate, enabling it to independently seek investment opportunities for emerging entrepreneurs and their innovative startups.
Several cabinet ministers, the Chief Secretary, commissioners, representatives of Start-Up India, and mentors from IIT Delhi and IIM Shillong were present at the event.
