Guwahati, June 3 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, reiterated on Tuesday the critical importance of wetland conservation in urban areas as a powerful strategy to alleviate urban flooding.

During his visit to Silchar in the Cachar district to assess the ongoing flood situation, Sarma highlighted the environmental risks associated with the loss of wetlands.

He pointed out that wetlands near Silchar, including Malini Beel, Maheesha Beel, Rangirkhaal, and Singerkhal, play a vital role as natural reservoirs and their preservation could greatly aid in urban flood management.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that wetlands serve as natural drainage systems and warned that their destruction leads to dire consequences. He mentioned that the government is exploring long-term strategies to sustainably manage the urban flood challenges.

Upon arriving in Silchar, Sarma visited six relief camps established at various schools and community centers, such as Government Boys' HS School and Kendriya Vidyalaya Silchar.

He spoke with the residents at the camps to grasp their difficulties. The Chief Minister instructed District Commissioner Mridul Yadav to ensure that necessary relief supplies reach those in need.

He also urged the administration to pay particular attention to the requirements of elderly citizens, lactating mothers, and children, ensuring they have access to medical care and safe drinking water around the clock.

Sarma expressed his government's dedication to providing timely help, rehabilitation, and support to all individuals affected by the current flooding. He assured that once the floods recede, efforts will be made to facilitate the return of camp residents to their homes.

Despite the Barak River flowing above the danger level, he noted that no breaches of embankments have been reported. The administration is continuously monitoring the situation.

Commenting on the flooding in Silchar, the Chief Minister stated that sluice gates such as the one at Betukandi could not be opened due to the rising water levels, which resulted in water accumulation in lower areas of the town.

He revealed that measures are underway to install 10 water pumps for draining excess floodwaters, with provisions for additional pumps if necessary.

Sarma underscored the necessity for a permanent resolution, including the establishment of a dedicated pumping station for Silchar. However, he maintained that restoring wetlands and enhancing the town’s drainage system are crucial to prevent future water accumulation.

Point of View

The emphasis on wetland conservation by Assam's leadership reflects a growing recognition of environmental sustainability in urban planning. The proactive approach taken by the government could serve as a model for other regions facing similar flooding challenges. It is essential to balance development with ecological preservation to ensure resilient communities.
