Guwahati, Oct 27 (NationPress) Following a series of arrests connected to the contentious Veer Lachit Sena, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma convened a meeting on Monday to reiterate his administration’s dedication to ensuring peace and order within the state.
During this high-level meeting with senior Superintendents of Police (SPs), the Chief Minister assessed the current law and order landscape and directed officials to uphold that “the rule of law takes precedence over all else.”
On social media platform X, CM Sarma stated, “A secure Assam is of utmost importance. Today, I chaired a significant meeting with Senior SPs to evaluate the law and order status in Assam and instructed that the rule of law must prevail above everything.”
The meeting was held amidst rising apprehensions regarding the activities of the Veer Lachit Sena, a group accused of intimidation, extortion, and fomenting public unrest in various districts.
The recent abduction of Rahul Mishra from the Borbari region of Guwahati, allegedly involving members of this group, has heightened scrutiny on the organization.
In a prompt response, the Dispur Police managed to rescue Mishra and apprehended eight suspects, many of whom reportedly have connections to the Sena.
While investigations are currently underway, Chief Minister Sarma has suggested that the government might contemplate prohibiting the organization if their criminal involvement is substantiated.
Sources from the Home Department indicated that the Chief Minister’s discussions centered on combating emerging groups that exploit cultural or social platforms for illicit activities.
Officers have been instructed to bolster intelligence gathering and enhance coordination among districts.
Affirming his administration’s zero-tolerance policy, CM Sarma conveyed to officials that no person or group will be permitted to disrupt peace and harmony in Assam.
He emphasized that the government will take decisive action against any entity seeking to undermine the state’s stability.
