Guwahati, Jan 27 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday emphasized that the state government is undertaking numerous initiatives to enhance the education sector while collaborating with all stakeholders.
He noted that the government is focused on constructing state-of-the-art schools throughout the state, which will significantly transform education.
“These educational institutions will be set up in each Assembly constituency, with some areas receiving multiple schools equipped with modern amenities,” CM Sarma stated.
On a related note, CM Sarma revealed that the state government plans to revoke the new pension schemes, opting instead for the Central government's Unified Pension Scheme for employees starting in April.
During his Republic Day address in Dibrugarh, the Chief Minister remarked, “There has been dissatisfaction among state government employees regarding the New Pension Scheme (NPS). The state government has decided to abolish the NPS in Assam, and the Unified Pension Scheme will be effective from April. This will guarantee that after 25 years of service, employees will receive 50 percent of their last drawn salary along with 50 percent of the Dearness Allowance as pension post-retirement.”
He also mentioned that some employees hired since 2005, prior to the introduction of the NPS, were not able to enroll in the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for various reasons. According to the Chief Minister, these individuals will now be transitioned to the OPS.
In addition, CM Sarma highlighted plans to develop three towns into cities, with Dibrugarh becoming the state’s second capital, including a new Assembly complex to be built there within the next two years.
He stated, “We are working on transforming three towns into cities—Dibrugarh, Tezpur, and Silchar. Dibrugarh will host an Assembly complex by 2027, establishing it as Assam's second capital.”
