Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, 15 July announced that restaurants in Guwahati will be permitted to stay open until 3.30 am on four nights to allow football fans to watch the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and final without disruption. The decision covers 15, 16, 19, and 20 July — the dates of the tournament's closing matches.

What the Order Covers

The Guwahati District Administration has been formally authorised to extend restaurant operating hours to 3.30 am on the four designated nights. The relaxation applies to restaurants, cafes, and eateries that host public viewing on large screens — venues that typically draw large crowds for late-night international fixtures.

Chief Minister Sarma announced the decision in a post on X, stating: 'Football unites people, and we want our sports lovers to enjoy the FIFA World Cup semi-finals and final without inconvenience.'

Relaxation May Extend to Other Districts

Beyond Guwahati, Sarma indicated that similar extensions could be granted across other districts of Assam based on local demand. 'I have authorised the District Administrations in other districts to permit similar extensions, wherever there is a request from the Restaurant Owners' Associations and local public demand,' he said.

This district-level delegation means the relaxation is not automatic statewide — local associations and residents would need to formally request it, after which the respective district administrations would issue the necessary permissions.

Football commands an unusually strong following in Assam and the broader Northeast, making the state one of India's most engaged audiences for the FIFA World Cup. Large public viewings at hospitality venues have become a fixture during major tournaments, and late-night match timings — owing to the time-zone difference with host nations — have historically created friction with standard closing hours.
