Assam Police Ramp Up Efforts to Curb Drink and Drive Incidents This New Year's Eve

Guwahati, Dec 31 (NationPress) The Assam Police have launched an intensified campaign to enforce traffic regulations on New Year's Eve this Tuesday. A senior official remarked, "We are focusing on Guwahati, where many individuals engage in drink and drive behavior during New Year's festivities. Various checkpoints have been established throughout the city, with a significant number of police personnel assigned to prevent any unfortunate incidents."

Recently, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma conducted a video conference with District Commissioners, Police Superintendents, and officials from the Transport and Excise Departments to evaluate road accidents in the state and the enforcement of road safety measures.

During this meeting, the Transport and Police Departments shared insights regarding the factors contributing to road accidents in different districts, specifically highlighting incidents of driving under the influence of alcohol in Guwahati.

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of implementing strict actions statewide by January 15 to deter driving after alcohol consumption, particularly after 10 p.m. He also directed relevant departments to improve lighting at pedestrian overpasses and flyovers. Furthermore, the discussion covered the issue of accidents occurring on rural roads.

He instructed the Chief Secretary to ensure that speed breakers are installed at critical locations such as schools, hospitals, and police stations.

CM Sarma mandated the establishment of two speed breakers for every kilometre of rural roads, emphasizing that their positioning and design should be determined in consultation with local residents.

Additionally, he called upon the Chief Secretary to publish a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for this initiative, underlining the necessity of integrating street lights, speed breakers, and signboards into road construction projects.

CM Sarma provided specific directives to Police Superintendents in border districts concerning vehicle entry protocols. He highlighted the need for roadside eateries (dhabas) along national highways to offer adequate parking facilities and prohibited the parking of trucks in front of these establishments.
