New Delhi, Nov 7 (NationPress) Former England captain Michael Vaughan suggested that if he were in Australia’s shoes, he would have selected Mitchell Marsh to open the batting for the first Test in Perth, commencing on November 21. He highlighted that Marsh, being a right-handed batsman, would have posed significant challenges for England in the Ashes opener.
Marsh has been in remarkable form in the white-ball formats and last appeared in a Test during the fourth match of the Border-Gavaskar Series at the MCG last December before being sidelined.
“I believe Mitchell Marsh has been Australia’s standout player for the past couple of months. Although it’s a different format, his composure at the crease has been exceptional. The innings he played in 2023 at Headingley, facing 95 miles per hour deliveries from Mark Wood, was outstanding. His ability to handle pace bowling is the reason I would have opted for Mitch Marsh at the top of the order,” Vaughan stated, as reported by Fox Cricket.
Vaughan further noted that Marsh’s right-handed stance would be advantageous, particularly against Jofra Archer, who would prefer facing left-handers at the top.
Uncapped left-handed batsman Jake Weatherald is poised for a potential Test debut after being named in the 15-player squad, likely to partner Usman Khawaja at the top, considering his impressive Sheffield Shield performance last season.
Weatherald led the run-scorers in last season's Sheffield Shield competition and has maintained his form in the current season.
“I’m also a supporter of Jake Weatherald. He’s earned his opportunity and has shown great performance in the Big Bash and at state level over several years,” Vaughan added.
“However, if it were up to me – which it isn’t – I would have chosen Mitchell Marsh,” he concluded.
Australia's squad for the first Test includes: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Brendan Doggett, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster.
