Darwin, Aug 8 (NationPress) Australia's T20I captain Mitchell Marsh announced that he will be Travis Head's consistent opening partner leading up to the T20 World Cup, set to take place in India and Sri Lanka early next year, commencing with the T20I series against South Africa.
Since David Warner's retirement following last year's T20 World Cup, Australia has utilized five different openers in T20 matches, including Matt Short, Glenn Maxwell, and Jake Fraser-McGurk.
Although Marsh and Head have not opened together in T20Is, their successful partnership in ODIs boasts an impressive average exceeding 50, with a strike rate above 12 runs per over across eight partnerships.
"It'll be myself and Heady at the top for the foreseeable future. We've played extensively together and have developed a fantastic relationship, so we'll start there," Marsh stated to reporters in Darwin on Friday.
The 33-year-old all-rounder missed the Champions Trophy ODI tournament earlier in 2025 due to worsening back issues that he dealt with during the home summer. Upon his return, he guided Australia to a remarkable 5-0 T20 clean sweep against the West Indies.
While Marsh did not disclose the entire lineup for the opening match against South Africa on Sunday, he suggested that David might be elevated in the batting order due to his record-breaking 37-ball century in the third T20 against the West Indies.
"We've discussed it... We witnessed in the Caribbean that he batted earlier than usual. His skill set suits that position perfectly. The more balls he faces, the more games he can help us win," Marsh remarked.
The Australian team will play three T20Is and as many ODIs across Darwin, Cairns, and Mackay from August 10 to 24.
