Cairns, Aug 18 (NationPress) Australia’s interim ODI captain Mitchell Marsh expressed that he does not foresee a significant alteration in the team’s batting strategy as they transition from T20 internationals to ODIs against South Africa, commencing at the Cazalys Stadium on Tuesday.
After leading Australia to a 2-1 victory in the T20I series, Marsh will again take the helm for the ODIs in the absence of regular captain Pat Cummins, who is currently on rest. During the T20I series, Australia adopted an aggressive approach from the outset—yielding victories but also resulting in some batting collapses.
However, Marsh is optimistic that Australia will continue this fast-paced batting style in ODIs. "Preparing to be on the field for three and a half hours will be a bit different for some players. But as a team, not much really changes. There’s a slight mindset shift, given the different format, but the core principles remain the same," Marsh told the media on Monday.
Marsh has captained Australia in ODIs nine times, including tours to South Africa in 2023 and England in 2024, when Cummins was unavailable. Traditionally favoring a chasing strategy in T20Is, Marsh suggested that the same approach might be adopted by the hosts in the ODI series.
"It’s generally a common trend in T20 cricket today. You analyze the conditions but also know the target you’re chasing. I’m not opposed to batting first, but we have leaned towards bowling first. Playing with dew is a challenge we aren’t accustomed to in Australia. We witnessed the ball softening significantly in Darwin during the third T20I. That posed a different challenge for us," he added.
The second and third ODIs are scheduled to take place at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Friday and Sunday.
