A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-called Jharkhand bandh on Tuesday, 11 August disrupted normal life across multiple districts of the state, as party workers took to the streets demanding accountability from the Hemant Soren-led government over the alleged lathi-charge on students during demonstrations in Ranchi. The shutdown also amplified the grievances of JPSC and JSSC examination aspirants, who have been pressing for action over alleged irregularities and paper leaks in competitive recruitment tests.

Bandh Impact Across Districts

In Giridih, BJP workers forcibly shut shops, disrupted bus services, and staged a road blockade at Tower Chowk. Slogans were raised against the state government demanding that those responsible for the police action against students be held accountable.

The shutdown also hit Ramgarh, where party workers blocked roads at multiple points, including Subhash Chowk, and held demonstrations in solidarity with the protesting students. The statewide nature of the bandh underscored the BJP's intent to build political pressure on the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-led coalition.

ABVP March and Detentions in Ranchi

In the state capital Ranchi, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organised a protest march from the Old Vidhan Sabha to the New Vidhan Sabha. Police detained all participants as the march progressed, adding to the political temperature in the city. The detentions drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders, who argued that the government was suppressing legitimate student dissent rather than addressing its root causes.

Student Anger Over Exam Paper Leaks

The protests come amid sustained anger among students over repeated allegations of examination paper leaks and opaque recruitment processes in Jharkhand. Aspirants preparing for state government jobs through the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) have been demanding action against those responsible and greater transparency.

One protester voiced the frustration shared by thousands of aspirants across the state. 'How are paper leaks happening in Jharkhand? Where is the Hemant government? Where is the Jharkhand Education Minister? How are the papers being leaked? We study day and night, work hard and spend money on our education, and then the papers are leaked. What are we supposed to do?' the protester said, according to reports.

The same protester alleged that students raising these concerns were being met with force rather than answers. 'Students are being lathi-charged and beaten. What kind of justice is this?' the protester asked.

Political Confrontation Deepens

BJP leaders maintained that the party was firmly backing the student movement and demanded that Chief Minister Hemant Soren explain both the police action and the recurring examination irregularities. The developments have sharpened the political confrontation in Jharkhand, with the opposition framing the student unrest as a governance failure by the ruling dispensation.

Notably, this is not the first time student protests over examination-related grievances have spilled into broader political agitation in the state. The pattern of alleged paper leaks, followed by demonstrations and police action, has recurred across multiple recruitment cycles, raising questions about systemic accountability in Jharkhand's examination administration.
