Guwahati, Sep 2 (NationPress) Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal unveiled an array of visionary projects on Tuesday, aimed at transforming Assam and the Northeast into a pivotal center for India’s river tourism and inland waterways development.
During the Water Voyage Northeast 2025 conference, Minister Sonowal revealed that two luxurious cruise vessels are being constructed with a total investment of Rs 250 crore for operations on the Brahmaputra river.
These ships, currently being built at the Hooghly Cochin Shipyard in Howrah, are expected to launch in 2027 under the government's Cruise Bharat Mission.
“The Brahmaputra is not merely a river; it is our lifeline. By establishing modern cruise terminals, ship repair facilities, and skill development centers, we are unlocking the complete potential of this majestic river,” the Union Minister emphasized.
He further disclosed that over Rs 1,000 crore has been allocated to enhance inland waterway infrastructure in the Northeast, with Rs 300 crore worth of projects already finalized and the remainder advancing toward completion.
Minister Sonowal stated, “A Rs 239 crore ship repair facility at Pandu — the first of its kind in the region — will become operational by 2026. A Rs 180 crore dedicated access road linking NH-27 directly to Pandu Port is set for completion by September 2025, alongside Rs 299 crore worth of tourist jetties at Guijan, Neamati, Bishwanath Ghat, and Silghat, which will significantly enhance cruise tourism.”
He added that a Rs 188 crore Regional Centre of Excellence in Dibrugarh will equip 5,000 maritime professionals with training.
Union Minister Sonowal highlighted that Assam currently operates 14 of India’s 25 river cruise vessels, with increasing global recognition.
“Forbes has recently ranked the Ganga river cruise among the world’s top 10. Assam is on the verge of becoming the next global river cruise destination,” he declared.
The Cruise Bharat Mission, initiated last year, aims to develop 100 river cruise terminals and seeks to double passenger numbers by 2029.
Emphasizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision, Minister Sonowal remarked, “Under his guidance, the Northeast has been positioned at the heart of India’s maritime strategy. Our youth will not only propel growth in Assam but also help elevate India as a global maritime powerhouse.”
