Kolkata, June 23 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress is on the brink of a significant triumph in the by-elections for the Kaliganj Assembly seat in Nadia district, West Bengal. Party candidate Alifa Ahmed has surpassed her father’s winning margin from the 2021 Assembly polls after the completion of the 18th counting round on Monday.
Currently, Ahmed leads by a substantial margin of 47,866 votes. In the previous assembly election, her late father, Nasiruddin Ahmed, who was a Trinamool Congress legislator, won the seat by a margin of 45,987 votes against BJP's Abhijit Ghosh.
After the 18th round, Alifa Ahmed has garnered 85,043 votes, significantly ahead of BJP’s Ashish Ghosh with 37,177 votes, and the Left Front-backed Congress candidate Kabil Uddin Shaikh at 25,313 votes.
This indicates that the votes for the Trinamool Congress candidate surpass the total votes for both the BJP and Congress candidates combined.
A total of 23 rounds of counting will take place.
Commenting on Ahmed's lead, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee noted that the people of all backgrounds in Kaliganj have shown immense support for her party by exercising their voting rights in the by-elections.
“I sincerely thank them. The key players in this victory are the people, our land, and our mothers. My colleagues in Kaliganj have put in relentless efforts. Congratulations to them, and my best wishes to all,” stated the Chief Minister.
Kaliganj is predominantly a minority area, with Muslim voters making up nearly 60 percent of the electorate.
The counting process is taking place with stringent three-tier security measures, featuring only Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) personnel in the innermost security zone of the counting halls.
