New Delhi, July 25 (NationPress) Over the past 11 years, the average utilisation of the 10% Gross Budgetary Support (GBS) allocated to the northeastern states has significantly surpassed expectations, reaching levels of 104%, 112%, and even 114% in certain years, as stated by Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Minister of Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER).
During a consultative committee meeting, he emphasized that ministries facing ongoing shortfalls are being closely monitored to establish realistic targets, with a strategic emphasis on high-value departments.
Scindia highlighted the pivotal role of Members of Parliament (MPs) in pinpointing impactful projects and assured them that the DoNER Ministry will persist as an effective intermediary between states, central ministries, and elected officials.
This meeting aimed to review and enhance coordination under the provisions of the 10% GBS for the 'Ashtalakshmi' states.
The discussions centered around bolstering inter-ministerial coordination, speeding up grievance resolutions, and ensuring that the mandated GBS allocation translates into tangible development outcomes across the eight Ashtalakshmi states.
The Minister reiterated the government's commitment to a whole-of-government approach, aligning this initiative with the broader vision of a #ViksitNortheast and India’s Act East Policy.
Additionally, the recently held 'Rising North East Investors Summit 2025' garnered investments totaling approximately Rs 5 lakh crore, positioning the region as a significant contributor to India’s overall advancement.
Previously, there were nine airports in 2014; now, the northeast boasts 17 airports. States like Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim had no airports for 65 years, but today, Arunachal Pradesh has four and Sikkim has one, as noted by the minister.
In 2014, there were 10,000 km of national highways; today, that figure stands at 16,000 km.
The northeastern region is pivotal to India's ambitious goal of a $30-trillion vision for Viksit Bharat by 2047, according to the minister.
