Hyderabad, Feb 18 (NationPress) Backward Classes have achieved a remarkable victory by securing over 61% of the seats in the municipal elections recently conducted in Telangana.
Although 28.22% of wards in municipalities and 35.25% of divisions in municipal corporations were reserved for BCs, they managed to dominate with 61% of the wards and divisions.
The Chairman of the BC Commission, G. Niranjan, along with members Rapolu Jayaprakash, Tirumalagiri Surender, and Balalakshmi Rangu, expressed their satisfaction over the significant number of seats won by BCs, indicating a growing awareness within BC communities.
The elections for 116 municipalities and seven municipal corporations took place on February 11, with results announced on February 13.
In the prior Panchayat elections, BC candidates claimed 52.75% of the seats, including those from the general category.
They are optimistic about future elections for Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs), Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs), Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and other corporations, hoping for more victories.
A comprehensive survey in the state revealed that BCs constitute 56.33% of the population.
Despite the State Assembly passing a bill to provide 42% reservation for BCs, it remains pending approval from the Centre.
The BC Commission's leadership noted that some individuals have approached the courts to impede the implementation of this reservation.
Based on the success in the recent elections, the BC Commission urges the Central government to approve the 42% reservation by incorporating it into the 9th Schedule.
They also appealed to those who have filed lawsuits to withdraw them, facilitating the smooth implementation of the 42% reservation.
