Baramati bypoll: Sunetra Pawar wins by record 2.18 lakh margin

Sunetra Ajit Pawar of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) – Ajit Pawar faction scripted electoral history on Monday, 4 May, winning the Baramati Assembly bye-election by a record margin of 2,18,930 votes — the highest winning margin by any legislative candidate in India's history, according to available data. The victory came after 24 rounds of counting, with not a single opponent crossing the 1,000-vote mark.

A Record That Rewrites History

Sunetra Pawar's margin surpasses the previous national record of 2,14,835 votes held by Sunil Kumar Sharma from Sahibabad, Uttar Pradesh, who won in 2022. It also eclipses the 2019 Baramati margin set by her late husband, Ajit Pawar, who had previously represented the constituency. The scale of the win signals a near-total consolidation of local political support behind Sunetra Pawar.

The Numbers on the Ground

Of the 23 nominees who contested the bye-election, none came close to mounting a challenge. Karuna Munde received just 125 votes, while Abhijit Bichukale secured 121 votes. The result effectively rendered the contest one-sided from the early rounds of counting.

What Sunetra Pawar Said

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai, Sunetra Pawar dedicated her victory to the memory of her late husband.
