Baruipur lynching victim Indrajit Tanti was innocent, says CM Adhikari
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Tuesday declared that Indrajit Tanti, the 26-year-old youth lynched by a mob in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, was innocent — a conclusion corroborated, he said, by the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case. Tanti was beaten to death on 5 July after a crowd suspected him of involvement in the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl, whose body was recovered from a pond in the area.
What the Chief Minister Found on the Ground
Adhikari visited Baruipur on Tuesday and held meetings at the district police superintendent's office with senior law enforcement officials. He separately met the families of both the minor victim and the lynched youth.
'After speaking to the family members of the lynched youth, I am convinced that he was innocent. The findings of the Special Investigation Team have also pointed in the same direction. Justice will be ensured in this case as well. Those responsible in either of the two cases will not be spared,' Adhikari told reporters after his meeting with the top official of the Baruipur District Police.
Nearly 200 Identified in Violence and Vandalism
The Chief Minister said authorities have identified nearly 200 people who allegedly participated in violence and vandalism in the aftermath of the girl's death, including destruction of public property and rail tracks. 'We will not spare them as well,' he said.
Without naming any specific political party, Adhikari alleged that local politicians helped incite the unrest. He said police had recovered call records linking certain individuals to the instigation. 'The culprits behind instigating and also initiating violence and damaging public property will not be spared,' he added.
New Police Outpost Announced at Victim's Locality
As an immediate administrative measure, Adhikari announced that a dedicated police outpost would be established near the residence of the minor victim in the Suryapur area of Baruipur. He said the outpost would be operational before his next visit to the district, scheduled for the following week.
Background: Mob Attack After Girl's Body Recovered
Tension gripped South 24 Parganas after the body of the 12-year-old girl was found in a pond, sparking outrage in the community. An enraged mob turned on Tanti, suspecting him of being one of the accused, and beat him to death on 5 July. The SIT's preliminary findings now suggest the mob acted on a wrong identification, making the lynching a separate criminal tragedy layered onto an already grievous case. This incident is among a series of mob-violence episodes in West Bengal that have drawn scrutiny over law-and-order response times.
With the SIT investigation ongoing and nearly 200 suspects identified, the coming days are likely to see a wave of arrests across both cases.
