Kolkata, Nov 23 (NationPress) Three individuals were apprehended for committing a financial scam amounting to lakhs of rupees by falsely presenting themselves as officials of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), according to police reports on Sunday.
They are accused of soliciting funds under the pretext of rectifying documents for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. A coordinated raid by the Intelligence Department and the Special Operation Group (SOG) of Siliguri Police resulted in the arrest of the trio in north Bengal.
As per police sources, these individuals would contact ordinary citizens while pretending to be high-ranking NIA officials. They allegedly extorted money from various victims through intimidation.
A formal complaint was lodged against them at the Matigara police station in Siliguri, alleging financial misconduct.
The investigation, led by the Intelligence Department along with the SOG of the Siliguri Police Commissionerate, employed multiple strategies to apprehend the suspects.
On Saturday, authorities captured the three during a sting operation by monitoring their mobile locations.
Numerous mobile devices and photocopies of various documents were seized from the arrested men, alongside a car.
Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Siliguri Police Commissionerate, Rakesh Singh, stated: "The suspects misled the public by assuming the identities of NIA officers. Following the complaints, all three have been detained. However, there are several accomplices still at large, and efforts are ongoing to locate them."
The arrested suspects include Ahsan Ahmed and Rehar Babar, residents of Panjipara, along with Manik Roy, a resident of Sevoke Road in Siliguri.
The police reported that the trio frequented Siliguri and its neighboring areas under false pretenses as NIA officials, targeting various individuals and allegedly extorting money through various forms of intimidation.
