Kolkata, June 19 (NationPress) Abhijit Gangopadhyay, the former judge of the Calcutta High Court and current BJP MP, was transferred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi via air ambulance on Thursday due to a decline in his health.
On June 14, the BJP representative was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata after experiencing severe abdominal pain and vomiting. Medical examinations revealed that he was suffering from acute pancreatitis complicated by gastrointestinal sepsis.
Initially, a seven-member medical board was set up for his treatment, which was later expanded with an additional member.
A BJP official stated, “The decision to transfer Gangopadhyay to AIIMS Delhi was made on Thursday morning following a deterioration in his medical condition.”
West Bengal BJP president, Sukanta Majumdar, confirmed that the transfer aimed to provide Gangopadhyay with superior medical care and facilities.
“We are hopeful and praying for his swift recovery,” Majumdar expressed.
The medical board at the Kolkata private hospital had previously indicated that prolonged treatment for the former judge was necessary.
Gangopadhyay gained national attention over the past two years due to his rulings in the multi-crore cash-for-school job scandal in West Bengal. His observations regarding corruption in this case have also captured public interest.
Prior to the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he resigned from his position as a judge at the Calcutta High Court, with the BJP nominating him as their candidate for the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency, traditionally a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress.
Gangopadhyay secured victory against Trinamool Congress’s Debangshu Bhattacharya by a significant margin of 77,773 votes.
