Synopsis
Key Takeaways
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday, 1 October 2026, paid tribute to Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar, who single-handedly overpowered a co-pilot attempting to sabotage and crash flydubai Flight FZ1073 en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. Adhikari said Captain Machchhar's supreme bravery saved hundreds of lives and averted a catastrophe in the skies.
What Happened Aboard FZ1073
On Wednesday morning (IST), the co-pilot of the Boeing 737, which had more than 170 passengers on board, attempted to sabotage the aircraft and subsequently stabbed Captain Machchhar inside the cockpit when the pilot moved to stop him. At the time of the attack, the aircraft was cruising at approximately 34,000 feet before plummeting at a rate of roughly 23,000 feet per minute, reaching as low as 15,600 feet. Despite being stabbed and seriously wounded, Captain Machchhar fought back, subdued the co-pilot, and opened the cockpit door — allowing passengers and crew to assist in restraining the attacker.

Adhikari, in a post on X, wrote: 'I bow in deep respect and salute the extraordinary courage, presence of mind, and unyielding valour of Captain Smit Machchhar. Aboard Flydubai Flight FZ1073, on its journey from Dubai to Tel Aviv, Captain Machchhar faced an unthinkable crisis high in the skies. Despite being stabbed and grievously wounded inside the cockpit, his indomitable spirit never wavered. He fought back resolutely and managed to overpower the attacker and avert a catastrophic mid-air disaster.'
He further noted that 174 passengers and crew, including Israeli and other foreign nationals, owe their lives to the pilot's actions. Earlier on Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Captain Machchhar as a 'hero', stating that the country is proud of his valour for saving hundreds of lives. The tributes from both the Prime Minister and the West Bengal Chief Minister — who are political rivals — underscored the bipartisan national sentiment surrounding the incident.
