Kolkata, Nov 8 (NationPress) On Saturday, the government of West Bengal appointed Richa Ghosh, the wicketkeeper-batter who played a crucial role in the Indian women's team’s victory in the Women's World Cup, as Deputy Superintendent (DSP) in the state police.
At a vibrant ceremony held at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee symbolically presented the appointment letter to Ghosh, celebrating her remarkable achievement.
During the event, Ghosh was honored with the Banga Bhushan award by the state. The Chief Minister also gifted her a golden bat and a golden ball on behalf of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB).
Additionally, CAB awarded her a cheque of Rs 34 lakhs. The former captain of the Indian cricket team and ex-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Sourav Ganguly, was also present at the ceremony.
He elaborated that the cheque amount corresponded to the 34 runs scored by Ghosh in the Women’s World Cup final. “Her role as a number six batter was challenging due to fewer balls to face and a high asking rate, yet she performed exceptionally well,” Ganguly remarked.
Both the Chief Minister and Ganguly expressed optimism that Richa may one day captain the Indian women’s cricket team.
Ghosh shared insights about her preparation for the tournament, stating, “In net practice, I always set a target for myself, which helps me excel. I thrive on challenges and aim to contribute to my team's victories.”
The Chief Minister expressed her desire to see Sourav Ganguly at the helm of the International Cricket Council (ICC) someday, noting, “He has led the Indian team for years and has managed cricket administration effectively. I believe he will reach that position, and no one can hinder him.”
