Kolkata, Dec 4 (NationPress) Approximately 50 lakh names in West Bengal have been flagged for potential removal from the voters’ list, following the latest updates during the digitization of enumeration forms in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiated by the Election Commission of India (ECI) since November 4.

This figure was slightly above 46 lakh according to the digitization trend completed by Tuesday evening, and by Wednesday night, it surged to nearly 50 lakh. This indicates that around four lakh names have been added to the list of those likely to be excluded from the voters' list within just 24 hours.

According to insiders from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, out of the 50 lakh names earmarked for removal until Wednesday night, over 23 lakh belong to the “deceased voters” category, while those categorized as “shifted voters” amount to over 18 lakh.

Additionally, there are over seven lakhuntraceable” voters, while the remaining entries are “duplicate” voters or those marked for deletion for various other reasons.

The definitive list of names scheduled for removal from the voters’ list will be disclosed once the draft voters' list is published on December 16.

This draft list publication will be preceded by a notice phase, which involves issuing, hearing, verifying, and deciding on enumeration forms, as well as processing claims and objections concurrently handled by the electoral registration officers (EROs) from December 16 to February 7, 2026.

The review of various electoral roll parameters and acquiring the ECI’s approval for final publication is set for February 10, 2026.

Ultimately, the final electoral roll publication will occur on February 14, which was originally scheduled for February 7.

The current total number of voters registered in West Bengal, according to the electoral roll as of October 27, stands at 7,66,37,529.
