Will Documents from Bengal SIR be Preserved for Five Years?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 13 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Friday that the documents pertaining to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal will be maintained for the next five years.
During a virtual meeting led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, which included the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, and various district officials, the CEC emphasized the importance of document preservation.
A source within the CEO's office indicated that the CEC warned that if any foreign national appears on the final voters' list five years post the voter revision exercise, the responsible electoral officers, including the District Electoral Officers (DEOs), could face penalties from the Commission.
Moreover, the CEC pointed out that if any Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer is found responsible, it could adversely affect their annual confidential report, potentially hindering their career progression.
During the meeting, the CEC specifically instructed DEOs to ensure that only the 13 documents authorized by the Commission are accepted as valid identity proofs during the hearings on claims and objections related to the draft voters' list in West Bengal.
The CEC urged vigilance from the DEOs regarding this matter, especially during the scrutiny of documents during the hearing sessions. The CEC's office also noticed instances where unlisted and ineligible documents were uploaded by the Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs).
Additionally, CEC Kumar warned that disciplinary measures would be taken against any electoral officers if further violations come to the Commission's attention.
The CEC advised the CEO to take personal oversight of such issues.
The deadline for the hearings on claims and objections regarding the draft voters' list is set to conclude on Saturday.
Document scrutiny will continue until February 21, with the final voters' list scheduled for publication on February 28.
