Why is ECI Concerned About Unlisted ID Documents in Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 12 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has raised alarms regarding the acceptance of "unlisted" documents as valid identity proofs by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) during the ongoing hearings for the draft electoral roll in West Bengal.
Currently, the state is conducting hearings on claims and objections related to the draft voters’ list, which includes the verification of supporting identity documents submitted. Reports from micro-observers indicate multiple incidents where documents not part of the Commission’s sanctioned list were deemed acceptable as identity proof.
Sources revealed that the Commission was taken aback by the prevalence of these incidents, especially considering the repeated directives issued to officials cautioning against accepting documents outside the authorized list.
To address this, the Commission has resolved to pinpoint the EROs and AEROs involved and request clarifications regarding their acceptance of documents not outlined in the ECI guidelines, according to a source from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal.
“The Commission has designated 13 documents for acceptance as supporting identity proof. Additionally, it has reiterated to the EROs and AEROs multiple times that only these 13 documents should be recognized as valid proof. Despite this, the number of violations has frustrated the Commission,” the source said.
While the hearings for claims and objections to the draft voters’ list are set to continue until February 14, the scrutiny of submitted documents will extend until February 21. The final voters’ list is anticipated to be published on February 28.
Following the release of the final roll, a full Bench of the ECI is scheduled to visit Kolkata for a two-day review of the post-special intensive revision (SIR) scenario. Subsequently, the Commission is expected to announce the polling schedule for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.
