Kolkata, Feb 20 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has pinpointed electoral registration officers (EROs) and assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) as being “culpable” for “intentionally” postponing the uploading of identity documents that were collected during the hearings regarding claims and objections related to the draft voters' list in West Bengal.

According to sources from the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), around 120 to 150 EROs and AEROs have been identified as “culpable”. However, the ECI has not yet officially disclosed the total number of involved EROs and AEROs.

Sources indicated that certain EROs and AEROs were found to be deliberately stalling the document uploading process even five days after the extended deadline for hearings on February 14.

Additionally, they claimed that due to this intentional negligence regarding document uploads, a significant number of voters' documents remain pending in the system.

“Without these documents being uploaded, scrutiny cannot proceed. In such circumstances, it raises doubts about whether the deadline for completing the scrutiny by February 21 can be fulfilled,” the sources stated.

They added that if the scrutiny deadline is extended, the publication of the final voters' list, which is scheduled for February 28, would also need to be delayed.

The sources emphasized that the Commission is resolute in taking action against the EROs and AEROs found at fault.

“The Commission will initiate actions against them as per the provisions of the Representation of the People Acts, similar to actions already being taken against two EROs, nine AEROs, one data-entry operator, and three micro-observers,” the sources noted.

Point of View

It is crucial to uphold the integrity of electoral processes. The actions of the EROs and AEROs in West Bengal, if proven, undermine public trust in the electoral system. The Election Commission's commitment to accountability is vital for ensuring transparent and fair elections across the nation.
