Did the Trinamool Government File FIRs Against EROs and AEROs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 17 (NationPress) The government of West Bengal has finalized the filing of FIRs against two electoral registration officers (EROs) and two assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs), adhering to the deadline imposed by the Election Commission of India (ECI) for completion by 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Simultaneously, the state government has also registered an FIR against a data-entry operator involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal.
The ECI has found two EROs and AEROs guilty of permitting the inclusion of fraudulent voters in the electoral rolls during the SIR process in the state.
The data-entry operator has faced similar allegations.
Sources from the State Secretariat Nabanna revealed that the office of the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Nandini Chakraborty, has submitted a compliance report to the ECI's headquarters in New Delhi.
Previously, on the night of February 14, the ECI issued a final reminder to the West Bengal Chief Secretary’s office, establishing 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday as the deadline for registering FIRs against the two EROs, two AEROs, and one data-entry operator.
In this final reminder, the ECI pointed out that despite multiple reminders, the state government had been slow in taking action to register FIRs against these four errant electoral officials.
This prompted the Commission to enforce a deadline for the registration of FIRs against the four concerned officers.
Among the four officials facing FIRs are the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) of the Baruipur East Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district, Debottam Dutta Chowdhury, and the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) of the same constituency, Tathagata Mandal.
The other two officers include the ERO of Moyna Assembly constituency in East Midnapore district, Biplob Sarkar, and the AERO of the same constituency, Sudipta Das.
In August of the previous year, the ECI's headquarters in New Delhi instructed the West Bengal government to suspend these four electoral officers and to register FIRs against them.
However, the state government only executed part of the directive.
While the four officers were suspended, FIRs were not filed against them.
Additionally, one contractual data entry operator was also relieved of his responsibilities.
In January of this year, the ECI again directed the District Magistrate (DM) of South 24 Parganas, Arvind Kumar Mina, and DM of East Midnapore district, Purnendu Kumar Maji, to register FIRs against these four electoral officers.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had previously criticized the ECI's directive and accused the election body of acting as a “bonded labour of the BJP.”
She also asserted that the Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government would not take action against its own employees.
