Kolkata, Jan 2 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a directive to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal to initiate FIRs against four electoral officials implicated in voter enrolment manipulation within two Assembly constituencies.
Among those targeted are the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for Baruipur East Assembly constituency, Debottam Dutta Chowdhury, and the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO), Tathagata Mandal.
The other two officials include Biplob Sarkar, the ERO for Moyna Assembly constituency in East Midnapore, and Sudipta Das, the AERO of the same region.
A source from the CEO's office revealed that instructions from the ECI headquarters in New Delhi have been communicated to CEO Manoj Kumar Agarwal and the district magistrates, who also serve as district electoral officers for South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore.
This action follows a previous order from the ECI last August, when it had instructed West Bengal authorities to suspend these four officials and file FIRs against them.
However, the state administration only partially complied with that directive, suspending the officials but failing to register any FIRs. Moreover, a contractual data entry operator associated with the case was dismissed.
The four officials face allegations of tampering with the electoral rolls, prompting the ECI to demand their suspension and the filing of criminal charges against them.
At that time, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the ECI's actions, accusing the electoral body of functioning as the “bonded labour of the BJP” and asserting that her government would not pursue actions against its personnel.
