Kolkata, Jan 11 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has expressed dissatisfaction regarding the prolonged delays by two District Magistrates, who also serve as District Electoral Officers, in West Bengal. This delay pertains to the registration of FIRs against four electoral officers accused of manipulating the voter enrolment process.
On Saturday, the Commission sent reminders to the District Magistrates and District Electoral Officers of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts through the Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office, urging them to expedite the FIR registration against these four electoral officers.
Among the accused are the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for the Baruipur East Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas, Debottam Dutta Chowdhury, and the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) from the same area, Tathagata Mandal.
The other two officers implicated are the ERO of the Moyna Assembly constituency in East Midnapore, Biplob Sarkar, and the AERO from that constituency, Sudipta Das.
According to sources within the CEO's office, this marks the third occasion the Commission has underscored the necessity to file FIRs against these four officers.
The initial directive from the Commission was issued last August, instructing the West Bengal government to suspend these officers and file FIRs against them. However, the state government only partially complied; while the officers were suspended, FIRs were not filed.
Earlier this month, the ECI reiterated its instructions to the District Magistrates and District Electoral Officers regarding the registration of FIRs.
Upon learning that FIRs were still pending, the Commission on Saturday reminded the District Magistrates again to proceed with the registration.
These four officers have been accused of tampering with the voters' list.
