Kolkata, Jan 16 (NationPress) The government of West Bengal has formally requested the Election Commission of India (ECI) to reconsider its directive for severe disciplinary measures – which include both suspension and filing of FIRs – against four electoral officials in the state implicated in alleged voter enrolment manipulation across two Assembly constituencies.

A communication regarding this matter has been dispatched from the state’s Home Department to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal. This correspondence has been forwarded to the ECI headquarters located in New Delhi for further evaluation, as confirmed by an insider at the CEO's office.

Among the four officials facing potential FIRs, two are the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for Baruipur East Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district, Debottam Dutta Chowdhury, and the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) for the same area, Tathagata Mandal.

The other two are Biplob Sarkar, the ERO for Moyna Assembly constituency in East Midnapore district, and Sudipta Das, the AERO of that constituency.

To revisit, back in August of the previous year, the ECI had instructed West Bengal to suspend these four electoral officials and initiate FIRs against them.

Nevertheless, the West Bengal government only partially complied with this order. While the four officials were suspended, FIRs were not filed against them. Additionally, a contractual Data Entry Operator was also dismissed from service.

Earlier this month, the ECI reiterated its directive to the district magistrates of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore to proceed with registering FIRs against the four electoral officers. In response, just before the district electoral officers began this process, the state government submitted a request for the withdrawal of the disciplinary action order against these officials.

The officials stand accused of manipulating the voters’ list. In light of these allegations, the ECI had mandated their suspension and the filing of FIRs against them.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee subsequently criticized the ECI for its orders, alleging that the election body has become the “bonded labor of the BJP.” She firmly stated that her government would not take action against its employees.
