Why is the ECI Demanding Clarification from the Bengal Government Regarding Delays in FIRs Against Electoral Officers?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 21 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has formally requested clarification from the West Bengal government regarding the delays in filing FIRs against four electoral officers in the state. This includes two electoral registration officers (EROs) and two assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs) who are under suspicion for altering voter registrations in two Assembly constituencies.
A letter was sent by the ECI to West Bengal Chief Secretary Nandini Chakraborty, demanding an explanation within a 72-hour timeframe.
Recently, the ECI rejected a request from the West Bengal government to revoke its previous directive for stringent disciplinary actions against the four officers. By demanding clarification from the state within 72 hours, the Commission underscored its serious stance on the matter.
Among the four officers, Debottam Dutta Chowdhury, the ERO for the Baruipur East Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas, and Tathagata Mandal, the AERO for the same constituency, are specifically named.
The remaining two are Biplob Sarkar, the ERO for the Moyna Assembly constituency in East Midnapore, and Sudipta Das, the AERO from that area.
In August of the previous year, the ECI's headquarters in New Delhi issued directives for the suspension of these four electoral officers and the filing of FIRs against them.
However, the West Bengal government only partially complied with the order, suspending the officers but neglecting to file FIRs.
Additionally, a data entry operator on a contract was dismissed.
Earlier this month, the ECI instructed the district magistrates from South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore to ensure that FIRs were filed against the four electoral officers.
Nevertheless, before the district electoral officers could initiate the process of filing FIRs, the state government sought to withdraw the directive for disciplinary action against the four officers.
The allegations against these officers involve tampering with electoral rolls. Consequently, the ECI mandated their suspension and the filing of FIRs.
In response, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the ECI's actions, claiming that the commission has become a “bonded labour of the BJP” and asserted that her government would not take punitive measures against its officials.
