Kolkata, Jan 5 (NationPress) - The Election Commission of India (ECI) has formally requested action taken reports (ATRs) from the district magistrates, who also serve as district electoral officers (DEOs), of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore districts in West Bengal. This follows the ECI's recent instruction to file FIRs against four electoral officers implicated in irregularities concerning voter enrolment within two Assembly constituencies.

On January 2, the ECI mandated the DEO of South 24 Parganas to initiate FIRs against the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) for the Baruipur East Assembly constituency, Debottam Dutta Chowdhury, along with the Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO), Tathagata Mandal.

Simultaneously, the ECI directed the DEO of East Midnapore to register FIRs against the ERO of the Moyna Assembly constituency, Biplob Sarkar, and the AERO, Sudipta Das.

“Nearly 72 hours have passed since the Commission issued its order, yet the two DEOs have not acted. Therefore, on Monday, the Commission instructed the DEOs of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore to furnish an action taken report to the ECI promptly,” disclosed a source from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal, as reported by IANS.

For context, in August of the previous year, the ECI headquarters in New Delhi instructed the West Bengal government to suspend the four electoral officers and file FIRs against them.

Nevertheless, the West Bengal government only partially complied with this directive; while the four officers were suspended, FIRs were not filed against them. Additionally, a contractual data entry operator was also released from duty. The four officials faced allegations of manipulating the voters’ list, prompting the ECI to recommend their suspension and the filing of FIRs against them.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the ECI’s directive, claiming that the poll body was acting as the “bonded labour of the BJP” and stated her government would not take action against its personnel.

Following this, on January 2, the Commission reiterated its directives to the two DEOs to initiate FIRs against the two EROs and two AEROs involved.

Point of View

The actions taken by the Election Commission of India reflect a crucial step towards accountability. The insistence on FIR registration against electoral officers not only underscores the seriousness of the allegations but also highlights the need for transparency in the electoral process. It remains essential that such matters are addressed swiftly to uphold the democratic values of our nation.
