Kolkata, Feb 14 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) must take immediate disciplinary measures against electoral officers at various levels who are accused of intentional irregularities during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. Instead of repeatedly urging the state government to take action, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, emphasized the need for direct intervention from the ECI.

“The ECI is fully empowered to directly address the actions of erroneous electoral officers and file FIRs against them. To date, the Commission's response has been rather lenient. It is time for decisive action against these officials rather than merely issuing advisories to the state government,” Adhikari stated during a press briefing in Kolkata.

He also urged Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) to avoid following what he labeled as unethical verbal directives reportedly given by certain district magistrates (DMs), who also serve as District Electoral Officers (DEOs).

“I urge EROs and AEROs to demand written orders instead of acting on verbal instructions from district magistrates. Be mindful that any breach of the ECI guidelines could jeopardize your employment and lead to potential legal ramifications,” he warned.

During a virtual meeting with electoral officers in West Bengal, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar reportedly admonished seven DMs/DEOs for various violations predominantly linked to the Special Intensive Revision process.

The districts that came under scrutiny included Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Malda, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, and East Burdwan.

The CEC reaffirmed that DMs/DEOs lack the authority to request explanations from micro-observers assigned by the Commission for the evaluation of the Special Intensive Revision.

Additionally, the CEC issued a general warning to all DMs/DEOs, highlighting potential disciplinary actions for negligence that could negatively impact their annual performance reviews and career advancement.

Point of View

We recognize the significance of maintaining electoral integrity. The call for direct action by the ECI against errant officials is not just a political statement; it reflects the demand for accountability in the electoral process. Upholding the standards set by the ECI is vital for public trust and the democratic framework of our nation.
