Will the ECI Stand Firm Against Intimidation of Electoral Officers in Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 31 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Wednesday its firm stance against any form of intimidation directed at electoral officials, encompassing Electoral Registration Officers (EROs), Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs), Booth-Level Officers (BLOs), and election observers involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in West Bengal.
As per sources within the Commission, this message was clearly conveyed to a delegation of MPs from the Trinamool Congress, led by their general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, during their meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi. The delegation raised concerns regarding the SIR procedure.
The warning from the Commission comes in light of reports highlighting interruptions and coercive halting of sessions related to claims and objections concerning the draft voters’ list in various areas of West Bengal in recent days. There have also been reports of disturbances surrounding the vehicle of a special roll observer appointed by the ECI to oversee the revision process in the state.
According to ECI sources, strict action will be enforced against any individuals attempting to disrupt the mandated processes associated with the SIR.
The Commission also urged the Trinamool Congress leadership to ensure that their grassroots representatives refrain from threatening or intimidating electoral officials carrying out their responsibilities.
Notably, the names of two Trinamool Congress legislators, Asit Majumdar and Ashima Patra, along with state cabinet member Udayan Guha, have emerged in connection with allegations of their involvement in disrupting and forcibly shutting down hearing sessions while insisting that party booth-level agents be permitted to remain present during these proceedings.
ECI sources further indicated that objections regarding the establishment of polling booths within private housing complexes will not be acknowledged, and the SIR exercise will proceed as intended.
Additionally, the Election Commission has requested the West Bengal government to promptly disburse the increased honorarium for Booth-Level Officers (BLOs), as authorized by the Commission.
