Is the ECI Investigating Suvendu Adhikari's Allegations Against Three West Bengal DMs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 22 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) is currently examining complaints put forth by Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, against three District Magistrates, who also serve as District Election Officers (DEOs). Adhikari claims these officials failed to adhere to the protocols mandated by the poll panel during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in the state.
The District Magistrates in question hail from Adhikari's home district of East Midnapore, as well as from Hooghly and East Burdwan.
Adhikari confirmed that he had lodged his complaints with the central ECI team that visited West Bengal to assess the ongoing SIR activities.
"I briefed the commission's delegation about how these three District Magistrates were operating in ways that contravened the commission's guidelines during the revision exercise. There have been allegations that they exerted undue pressure on the booth-level officers," stated the opposition leader.
Sources from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in West Bengal acknowledged the receipt of Adhikari’s complaints, indicating that the commission is taking the accusations seriously.
Adhikari has consistently criticized the actions of the District Magistrates and DEOs.
On Thursday, he released a statement, making serious allegations that the pressure on the BLOs was not related to the workload from the SIR, as claimed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, but rather due to District Magistrates compelling them to engage in unethical practices during the voter list revision.
The opposition leader further alleged that in districts such as East Midnapore, Hooghly, and East Burdwan, the District Magistrates and DEOs were acting as full-time agents for the Trinamool Congress, pressuring the BLOs to share official OTPs with either the magistrates or ruling party activists designated as data entry operators.
According to Adhikari, this unethical pressure was aimed at misusing the BLO App to manipulate the voter list, which is currently being revised through the SIR process.
