Did Suvendu Adhikari Challenge CM Mamata Banerjee's Claims on SIR in Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 5 (NationPress) In response to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari addressed a letter to Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, vehemently denying the allegations made by the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
Adhikari utilized his social media platform to share the contents of his letter, criticizing Banerjee for what he termed her “desperate lies” regarding the SIR initiative.
“I have sent a letter to the Hon'ble Chief Election Commissioner, @ECISVEEP Shri Gyanesh Kumar, debunking Mamata Banerjee's desperate lies against the SIR operation and her recent request to halt it. Her claims about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) are nothing but pure fiction,” said Adhikari.
He suggested that the TMC was unsettled by the SIR process, which could potentially unveil the presence of fraudulent and illegal voters in the electoral system.
“This ECI initiative is exposing the TMC’s hidden truths -- fake voters, deceased individuals on the rolls, and illegal infiltrators they have safeguarded for years to manipulate elections. It is evident that Mamata Banerjee is anxious because SIR poses a serious threat to her aspirations for 2026,” he asserted.
In his letter to the CEC, Adhikari noted, “I have thoroughly reviewed the letter dated January 03, 2026, from Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee, wherein she has once more unleashed a series of unsubstantiated accusations against the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Unfortunately, this correspondence... reeks of political desperation and an urgent attempt to undermine a vital constitutional procedure that threatens to reveal the corruption within our electoral rolls - a corruption that her TMC government has fostered for electoral advantage over the last decade.”
He further stated, “The Chief Minister's list of complaints is not only factually incorrect but a calculated distortion aimed at discrediting the ECI as 'politically biased' and fabricating a false narrative of widespread discomfort and disenfranchisement. In reality, it is her own administration and party apparatus that have worked to sabotage the SIR at every juncture: intimidating field officials (as seen in the case of Electoral Roll Observer; Shri C Murugan) through mob violence, subtle threats, and bureaucratic obstacles, flooding social media with misinformation, and organizing protests to cultivate an atmosphere of negativity and fear.”
“These unethical acts aim to depict the ECI's lawful diligence as harassment, when in fact, the Commission's actions are protecting the rights of legitimate voters while eliminating fraudulent ones. These tactics are a disgraceful attack on democratic institutions, and I call on the ECI to remain vigilant against these schemes. Below, I methodically refute her major allegations, highlighting their emptiness:”
This response from the Leader of Opposition followed Banerjee's letter to CEC Gyanesh Kumar, where she raised alarms over apparent irregularities, procedural breaches, and administrative shortcomings during the SIR process in Bengal.
In her letter, Banerjee asserted that crucial instructions concerning the SIR process were being communicated informally via WhatsApp and text messages, lacking formal written notifications, circulars, or statutory orders. She claimed that this absence of formal documentation undermines transparency, accuracy, and accountability and could disenfranchise genuine voters.
