Kolkata, Jan 11 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, has sent a letter to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, responding to the claims made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her communication regarding the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR). He has labeled these allegations as "unfounded, overstated, and exaggerated".

On Sunday morning, Adhikari shared a copy of the letter via his X handle, stating, "I have written to the Hon'ble Chief Election Commissioner of India, Shri Gyanesh Kumar, firmly disputing the unfounded, exaggerated, and overstated allegations made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in her letter dated January 10, 2026, concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls."

The BJP leader further asserted, "I want to emphasize that her assertions are merely a frantic attempt to disrupt this vital process, which reveals the issues in our voter lists; fraudulent entries, duplicates, and infiltrators that have been tolerated under TMC's governance for years. This is jeopardizing their electoral future, which is why she is now resorting to hysteria."

This action from the BJP's Nandigram MLA came shortly after Mamata Banerjee sent another letter to the CEC, claiming that the ongoing SIR of electoral rolls in the state was aimed solely at eliminating and excluding the names of current voters, rather than rectifying mistakes or adding new voters.

In her correspondence, the Chief Minister mentioned that her concerns arose from how the Commission has been categorizing voters under the “logical discrepancy” category and summoning them for hearings regarding claims and objections on the draft voters list, leading to inconvenience and distress for genuine and innocent voters.

In his response to Banerjee's allegations, Adhikari stated in his letter to the CEC, "Essentially, this letter from the Chief Minister is a desperate attempt to undermine the SIR, as it has caused irreparable harm to the TMC's prospects by exposing the issues in the voter rolls; issues that have allegedly been sustained through years of unchecked additions of fraudulent voters, including infiltrators. Stopping or weakening this initiative would betray the democratic principles enshrined in our Constitution and disenfranchise genuine voters who deserve fair elections."

While praising the ECI for its impartial and organized approach to the SIR, Adhikari remarked that the Chief Minister's depiction of this initiative as "unplanned, insensitive, and inhumane" was nothing more than a gross exaggeration, inflated to create public hysteria and divert attention from her government's shortcomings. "Her accusations of harassment, intimidation, and undue burden on ordinary citizens are baseless and seem crafted to politicize a routine constitutional process," he added in the letter.

The BJP leader concluded, "I urge the ECI to remain resolute, disregard these diversionary tactics, and finalize the SIR promptly, ensuring that West Bengal's electorate consists solely of eligible citizens. The citizens of our state deserve nothing less than an electoral process free from manipulation. I trust that the Commission will continue to uphold its Constitutional duty with the highest standards of integrity."
