Kolkata, Oct 25 (NationPress) The Food Department of West Bengal is set to commence the procurement of paddy from local farmers as the kharif season kicks off on November 1, according to a senior government official on Saturday.
The announcement highlights that farmers selling their paddy at designated government buying centers will receive their payments within a maximum of three working days. This money will be transferred directly to the farmers' bank accounts, ensuring swift financial support following the sale of paddy, as per the official statement.
The government aims to purchase paddy for the 2025-26 season statewide starting November 1.
To facilitate this procurement process, the Food Department is establishing 620 permanent buying centers. Additionally, around 179 mobile procurement centers will be deployed, particularly targeting remote areas to assist farmers.
These mobile centers are crucial for farmers who face challenges accessing nearby permanent buying points.
During the kharif season, various temporary paddy procurement camps will also be organized, managed by different government agencies.
According to the Food Department's guidelines, agencies must report the purchase of paddy at these temporary camps the day after the sale. The Food Department will then verify this information and quickly transfer funds to the farmers' bank accounts.
Farmers will receive Rs 2,369 per quintal for their paddy this season. Moreover, the state government has introduced an additional bonus of Rs 20 for sales made at government purchasing centers, bringing the total to Rs 2,389 per quintal.
It is important to note that online registration is required for farmers wishing to sell their paddy. They must visit the designated purchase center on the assigned day.
"If, for any reason, reaching the center on the scheduled day is not possible, re-booking is necessary," stated the official.
From November to February, these four months are recognized as the busiest and most crucial period for paddy procurement.
